It costs nothing to be kind.......or does it?

It costs nothing to be kind. Or so they say.  I disagree.  Some days it can cost a great deal.  Maybe you're having a bad day.  Maybe you spilled your coffee. Which is horrible in two ways, first, you made a mess, second, you no longer have coffee.
The horror.

Or maybe someone cut you off in traffic.  Things like this can make you want to head for the nearest liquor store and start grabbing bottles of the shelf.  Or maybe that's just me.  Whatever the circumstances are, you are in a pisser of a mood and you are dying to take it out on the first unlucky idjit that crosses your path.  I mean, people, what a bunch of bastards.  People can be kind or they can be cruel.  Some days I think it takes a lot more effort to be kind.  Especially when you just aren't feeling it.  No one has been kind to you, why should you bother being kind to anyone else?  Because you need to be.  I work an IT Help Desk.  I've been in Customer Service of one sort or another since my first job at 16 at a local restaurant. I think everyone should have to work some sort of customer service gig in their life so they know how it feels.  When you have someone look you in the face and tell you that you suck, it gives you an appreciation for people who are kind. So be kind. Even though it costs you.  Spread that shit around.  The internet seems to have given license to the darkness in humanity. People can anonymously spread around cruelty that is so audacious, it's breathtaking.

"You can't fix yourself by breaking someone else." ~Unknown

No, you can't.  And even though it may cost you, be kind anyway.  If we all took a minute and tried to live our lives by the Golden Rule, think how much nicer a world this would be.

Don't mean to lecture.  Just trying to spread a little Peace and Harmony into the universe.  Love and Light my friends.

Cruising in a Land Yacht

So, a couple nights ago I had a dream, I don't always remember my dreams, but sometimes I have some doozies that stick with me after I wake up.  For some reason I dreamed of the Chevy Caprice my mom had when I was little.  I dreamed that I saw one somewhere and tried to take a picture with my phone. Now, no matter how hard I tried and no matter what I did, every picture I took turned out fuzzy.  I drove all over the place following this car everywhere trying to get another picture.  Now that I think about it, seems I remember I had the same dream about Nathan Fillion a while back.  I saw him out in public and he agreed to take a selfie with me and no matter how hard I tried, the picture wouldn't come out.  I followed him around repeatedly asking him to take more pictures.  He was kind and gracious every time (he really is ruggedly handsome). I was mortified.  Okay, I'm officially noticing a trend.  I was trying to decide if the car dream had some deep and existential meaning or if it was just, you know, a weird dream.  Now I'm sure that there is some sort of psychosis at work. Apparently I have a not so subtle fear that I totally suck at taking pictures?  Hmmmm......

Don't know what a Chevy Caprice looks like?  By my guess it was somewhere between a 67 and 70 model.  I was born in 70 and I remember mom driving it for years.  I don't have any real pictures of it.  My mom didn't believe in pictures.  I'm not sure if she didn't like the way she looked or if it was the fact that she was so tall and ended up getting her head cut off in most of them.  So, I don't have a lot of pictures of my childhood.  So I found a picture online of the car in question.  The color is right, but the finish on ours was more dull.  Although, the picture really doesn't do it justice to show how big this car was.  Of course, it could be I was a smaller person at the time.  I remember being able to lay down in the back seat and completely stretch out.  You had to pull down the license plate to get to the gas cap and the trunk could have fit more dead bodies than I am comfortable admitting.  I have no memory of when we got rid of it.  I just remember when my mom had her newer car after this one. This one was blue beacon of my childhood and will always hold a special place in my heart.

I love cars, I pride myself on being able to identify most cars by the body style.  Maybe the Blue Bomber was the one that started it all.  Who knows. If I had the funds for the upkeep, I'd own a classic car of some sort.  Technology is nice but these cars totally still rock.  What can I say, I'm an old soul.

So, completely random post but then, I've warned you guys about these.

Holidays Schmolidays

Another Christmas and New Year have come and gone in the blink of an eye.  Well, at least I can be grateful it went by fast and was relatively painless.  You see, Christmas is one of my least favorite times of the year.  (Right after Single's Awareness Day, otherwise known as Valentine's Day)  I know what you are thinking, who hates Christmas?  Well, let's see, there's Scrooge, the Grinch and me! Christmas as a kid is about wonder and magic and presents and as an adult its more about stress and financial ruin.  This year I did not buy a single Christmas present until the weekend before and by then I was in an all out panic to get it all done in time.  Partly because I didn't have funds until then and mostly because I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that it was time for Christmas again.

See, I'll be 100% honest here, the holidays suck worse when your single.  Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of family and friends, but it's not the same.  About 90% of the time, I enjoy my single status, I actually revel in it.  Especially when most of the non-single types are always sharing their relationship woes with me.  I'm all, ha, ha - No one complains to me this or that isn't done.  Well, except my teenage daughter but I can ignore her and it's not a big deal.  That other 10% of the time? Well, I just muddle through the feelings of being lesser because I'm alone.  They don't last long and I know I'm single by choice mostly but it's just harder to keep that in mind during the holidays when every commercial on TV is some happy couple doing something or other.  The Zale's commercials alone make me stabby.  My family came to visit me and it was wonderful having them. I'll admit by the time I bundled them off home I was completely ready for some alone time.

So, back on topic, I much prefer Halloween. It's all about fun and dressing up and for one night you can pretend you are someone else, anyone else.  Heck, you can pretend you're anyTHING else for that matter.  The only thing holding you back is your imagination..  It won't financially ruin you, unless you live in a neighborhood like mine where you have to start buying candy in early September to start storing up. I go through about $100 of candy every year, but it's worth it to see all the kids in their costumes roaming up and down the streets and having the time of their lives.  It's so much fun!!  I look forward to it every year.

The only thing I hate is that every year Halloween stuff starts appearing in stores around the end of August.  I know what you are thinking, why would that make me mad if Halloween is my favorite holiday?  Because, at the end of August, I'm buying back to school supplies and don't have funds for Halloween yet.  By the time, I'm ready to buy Halloween stuff, it's been relegated to one to two shelves in the store to make way for Christmas crap, this happens around the end of September. By the time Halloween rolls around it looks like Santa's Wonderland in every store you go in.  I swear if the stores could get away with putting out Christmas decorations after Fourth of July, they would. Wonder why it is the year seems to go by so fast?  I blame retailers.  One holiday at a time folks and let's keep the decoration selling to the appropriate month!  Christmas is barely over with before you start seeing Valentines Day crap on the shelves.  I am NEVER mentally prepared for all that pink.  I hate a day that tells says you HAVE to be romantic.  That's kind of kills the romance for me.  You shouldn't plan romance.

Anyway, back to the point, if I had one, I'm grateful the Holidays are behind us. Trying to look at this new year as a fresh start with all kinds of exciting possibilities.  I am kind of against resolutions, but I do need to make some goal lists and post them where I can see them.  One of my goals is to WRITE MORE.  So you can expect to hear more from me this year.  Hopefully, that's a good thing.

Adventures in Starvation

Obviously not real starvation.  But it sure felt like it to this food addict. Close enough to make me hope I don't ever have to experience actual starvation.  The worst part was it was all self-inflicted.  I've always been against fad diets.  I know they don't work, or if they do you just end up gaining the weight back after you stop the diet.  Hence the whole "it's a lifestyle change" crap, blah, blah, blah.  When you're 44 and close to 50 pounds overweight and nothing you've tried seems to work, you get a little desperate.  Some of you may be thinking, only 50 pounds, that's not that bad and it's not.  I'm blessed to be about 5'9" so I can carry off a little extra weight without looking that overweight.  I see it in the mirror, but others don't seem to, or maybe they just love me.  The issue is that I already suffer from high blood pressure and Diabetes runs in my family so....I need to do something.  I like to blame my child for stealing my metabolism.  I had it great until I turned 30 and had a child at the same time.  Not that I regret it one bit mind you, I just wish she'd give some of it back. Do you know what it's like to live with someone who can eat whatever they want and have zero percent body fat?  Meanwhile I look at food and gain weight.

The problem?  I love food.  I mean LOVE food.  I think I've mentioned before, if I could marry food, I would.  I don't eat "that" bad, but I think it's probably the quantity that I eat.  It's so very hard for me to leave amazing food behind on my plate.  I don't drink sodas but my other love is beer.  I love beer.  And not watered down light beer, I've been trying different craft beers and they are yummy.  And their made from hops - hops = barley - barley = grain.  Hence, beer is grain and grain is good for you.  Okay not really but it's so darn good!  My other problem.  I want to enjoy my life.  I don't want to be miserable because I'm depriving myself and starving myself.  That's not how I want to live.  That's what my taste buds say anyway.

I knew I needed to try something different to jump start my system.   So I tried the Military Diet or 3 Day Diet.  http://blessedmommy.hubpages.com/hub/Lose-Up-To-10-Pounds-In-3-Days-On-The-3-Day-Diet It claims you can lose up to 10 pounds in 3 days.  Okay, that's completely unhealthy weight loss and I know that. So I was realistic going in.  The idea is you eat only the suggested items for 3 days and then go back to eating "normal" for the other 4.  I know me, if I go back to eating normal for the other 4 days, I'm going to completely gain back any weight I lost in the first 3.  Hell, I can gain it back in one day of binge eating and drinking. I'm allergic to bananas so I was glad this site provided alternatives to many of the foods.  So I chose apricots instead.  I'm also not a big ice-cream person so I went with yogurt instead.  The first day wasn't so bad, I went with iced tea and Splenda because I cannot drink black coffee.  We all laughed at work about my sad little breakfast and lunch, I laughed to keep from crying.  About half way thru the second day I realized I'd already cheated. I missed the part where you are supposed to have caffeine only the FIRST day.  Are you freaking kidding me!??! You want me to go without food AND alcohol AND CAFFEINE?! Hell no! That is so not happening.  I will be EVIL.  I will be Satan incarnate reigning terror down on everyone in my path!  So, I still had iced tea every day in the morning, and then switched to water.  I always only have one coffee and then switch to water so this wasn't hard for me.  By the end of the 2nd day, I was down 2.5 pounds and feeling pretty good.  I do have to add, I do exercise pretty regularly and both cardio and strength training. So yeah, the fact I can't lose any weight is pretty frustrating.

By the 3rd day I was pretty out of it.  I had no idea restricting my caloric intake so drastically would affect my ability to form words.  I would lose my train of thought and just not get it back. I was practically incoherent at times.  I forgot my one slice of cheese that was supposed to be part of my lunch and almost had a full-fledged meltdown. My co-worker shared her weight watcher's cheese stick with me and I practically wept with gratitude.  Never been so happy to nibble on a small piece of low fat cheese in my life. I was as happy as a bird with a french fry.  I kept telling myself, it's the last day, just hang in there!!! Don't give up. You can do this!  That last night I was so hungry, I went a little bit crazy.  Mind you, I'm drinking water like a fish.  But it simply was not staving off the hunger.  FEED ME SEYMOUR! FEED ME!!!!!!!!!  My stomach was sending frantic signals to my brain.  911, I'm losing it down here.  What the hell is going on, get some food down here stat!  I finally broke down and got some apple slices and a hard boiled egg.  If I was going to cheat I wasn't going to blow it completely.  My stomach was appeased for the moment and I was able to make it to the next day.

So, I weighed in the day after the 3rd day and low and behold, I had lost 5 pounds! I was pretty happy, no lie.  Now, to just keep it off and keep going.  My brain told my stomach to chill the hell out and get used to eating less.  Something I learned in those 3 days is that I eat way more than I think I do.  I was almost constantly shoveling food in my mouth.  I would make excuses like,  "Oh its just something small or it's healthy so that makes it okay."  But it was all adding up.  Or I would eat really good most of the day and then come home and eat my entire kitchen for dinner.

So one good thing to come from my adventure in starvation was that I have cut out most of my mindless snacking.  I've since gained and lost more weight.  I'm currently 5.5 pounds down from where I started, it's been 2 weeks since I tried the diet.  I would be down more weight if I didn't go a little crazy on the weekends.  I'm eating a lot less and I'm working out 5 - 6 times a week, alternating cardio and strength training. And yes, I'm measuring myself.  Not seeing a big difference yet but I'm hoping if I keep it up and stay consistent with it, I will soon.  I can always do the diet again.  Now that I know I can actually survive it, it isn't so bad.  That's what I tell myself anyway.  I'm sure my stomach disagrees.  It's like "Oh yeah, you want to form words, you better put some food in me or your going to be a babbling idiot again."

This post may be mildly amusing to some, it's not "bust your gut" funny, like I wish it was.  Want to read something hysterical that will have you in tears?  Of course you do.  I pulled a stomach muscle laughing so hard at this post by the Everywhereist.  http://www.everywhereist.com/i-went-paleo-and-now-i-hate-everything/  Probably won't be going Paleo anytime soon.  Do yourself a favor and don't read the comments. This is why we can't have nice things, folks. People who eat right apparently are so hungry they can't understand humor.  I'm not sure who AliceWonderland0 is but I think we could be great friends.

So I didn't completely lose my will to live on the 3 day diet.  I learned something from it and I'm going to use what I learned to keep going.  And before anyone chimes in and tells me all the things I should be doing, save your breath.  I am Irish/German.  I won't listen anyway.  And I actually can't hear much over the rumbling of my stomach.

Why try to fit in, when you were born to stand out. ~Dr. Suess

So, without going into the whole story, (which I am still debating with myself about doing) I recently came under an unprovoked verbal attack by messenger and text. In the midst of this, a supposed "adult" called me names.  Nerd.  Frog (not even sure what that was supposed to mean).  He told me, among other things, he would be embarrassed to be me.  I wanted to tell him he was the one that should be embarrassed and so many other things, but I said nothing, because I knew to reply would only have egged him on and I had no wish for the situation to escalate.  I mean, you can't reason with crazy and I now truly believe this person has some sort of psychological issues.  I don't really know this person but he seems to think he knows me.  Kind of scary really.

At first I was upset and angry and then, I started to laugh.  Nerd?  You call that an insult? Are you kidding?  I wear that like a badge of honor.  I've never really pretended to be anything I'm not.  I'm pretty much what you would call a WYSIWYG.  What You See Is What You Get.  The person people see on the outside is pretty much the same person I am in private.  It funny to me that people think being a nerd is an insult.  It amazes me that people still attack those that are different, WHEN WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT.  Let me say that again, we are all different and unique.  No two people are the same.  Some of us are just less concerned with fitting into what is considered the norm than others.

The group I hung out with in high school were the nerds and I would not have had it any other way. They were smart, funny, generous, loving people who accepted everyone for who they were.  Those outcasts, the nerds, the weirdos?  They would never call someone out for being different, instead they would celebrate that person's individuality.  The nerds and the dorks are some of the best people I know.  I'll be honest here, I was not always as confident as I am now, so back in the day, I didn't always like being a part of the nerd crowd.  But now, I'm glad that I was, it helped form me into who I am today.

People are shitty and some bullies never grow up.  But if anyone thinks that I am going to change who I am, they have another think coming.  If everyone out there was the same, what a boring world it would be.  I have also done my best to raise my daughter to be an individual and an independent thinker. (Sometimes, I've done too good a job at this and she uses that independent attitude against me.) To not care what anyone else thinks, to just be herself.  The right person will love you for who you are, not who you pretend to be.  I don't tell her anything I don't tell myself on a regular basis.

So I didn't give this person what they wanted, which was to hurt me by calling me names.  I am proud of being a nerd, a weirdo, being different.  I am who I am and I'm not going to change myself for anyone.  Hopefully, someday, I will find the right person who will appreciate me for who I am.  For now, I am content that I am me and I have lots of people in my life that love me anyway.

Nerd problems....

So I am about to go on a nerd rant.  I just thought it only fair to issue a warning.  Yes, I am a nerd.  I wear this badge with unabashed honor.  I guess today we are called "fan-girls" However, I feel I am too old and crotchety for this label.  But I was a "fan-girl" way before it was considered cool.  I collected comic books (still have them all), played Dungeons & Dragons, and watched Dr. Who back when he wore a 20 foot scarf  and carried a bag of jelly bellies in his pocket.

Anywho, what's got me on a tear lately is the most overused word of the moment, the dreaded "reboot".  The current buzz is about a reboot of Ghostbusters with an all female cast.  Ugh!  Who really thinks this is a good idea?!?!?  It's downright sacrilege!!   I mean if they want to make a comedy about four female ghost hunters, so be it.  Sounds like it could be good if done right.  But why, oh why must you try to re-make a classic movie?!   This has unmitigated disaster written all over it.  And let's keep it real, apparently there were a lot of sexist comments out on the interwebs about this.  Gender is not the issue here for me.  They could try to remake this movie with four dudes and you would still hear me squawking with dismay.  I like Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, but I don't think they will make this decent.  Let's stop and think for a minute, if you are basically going to have to re-write more than half the script to make it work, then why not just go on and write a whole new freaking movie!?!?  Seriously Hollywood, WHAT. THE.  HELL!?

Of course I didn't understand why they felt the need to "reboot" the Spiderman franchise about five seconds after the first three came out.  And do not even get me started on the remake of Footloose!  I still haven't seen it and I have no intention of ever seeing that movie.  Blake Shelton is not even talented enough to stand in the same ROOM as Kenny Loggins, let alone re-record a classic movie song!  And no Kevin Bacon?!  Fuggedaboutit!   There is only one Footloose and I watch it whenever I get the chance and it's still awesome.  You can't beat an intro like this:

Remember when they had writers in Hollywood that actually came up with original ideas?  I mean it's ridiculous.  People there is no Ghostbusters but the original Ghostbusters! Oh and the sequel which was pretty awesome too. I bet Harold Ramis is rolling over in his grave.  It's just sad.  Now the logo of a ghost with the red no symbol takes on a whole new meaning.  Just say no to reboots people. They suck.

A freaking year already!?

This blog is a journey that started on January 10th of 2014.  Well, to be honest, it started around my 11th year. That's when I remember making a clear decision anyway about what I wanted to do for a living, but it may have started even before then. Sometime while in elementary school, for a class project I wrote to an author of a book I liked. The teacher had us mail the letters to the author, care of the publisher. To my amazement, the author wrote back!  She was very nice.  I remember her book was about horses and horses took up most of the conversation.  It was then that I realized writers were real people, just like you and me!  It was quite the epiphany.  I've always had all these stories rambling around in my brain.  I wrote one down and let my mom read it.  I had only written about two chapters. I can still see her face as she looked up at me with pride and told me that she had to know what happened next and to keep writing.  It was an overwhelming feeling that I could reach others like that and bring them enjoyment. The same enjoyment I got from reading books.

Over the years I've put my writing on hold to live life. And life can suck the muse right out of you. I am also awful at outlining a story all the way through.  I see scenes in my head and I try to make them come to life on a page.  But to make a story that has a beginning, a middle and an end.  To bring conflict to the characters and create characters that the reader will care about?  Well it's a lot easier said than done.  Every writer I've ever talked to or read about says, you can't get into writing for the money. You have to get into it because you have a story that has to be told.  I have many, but getting them all out on paper before my inner critic can sweep in and tell me it's crap and it sounds just like every other story out there is unbelievably hard.  But I'm not ever giving up.  NOT EVER!

Thanks to the inspiration of a dear friend, whose simple faith in me that I will someday reach my goal, I started this blog.  (On a side note, that inspiration still gets me in the feels every time I think about it.) I started this blog in the hopes that it would get me writing more.  I think it has achieved that goal if nothing else.  It's also fun.  I am hoping this next year will be the year I write more, much more, that's my goal.  I hope to post more here and write more for me.

If you are reading this, thank you, thanks for taking the time out of your day to read my ramblings. To my friends and family, thanks for the love and support.  I couldn't do it without you!  Have a wonderful new years and be on the lookout for more from me in the new year!!

Christmas songs that really aren't Christmas songs

I haven't written a new post in a long time.  I never seem to be able to think of anything to write about. The other day I was thinking about songs that get played at Christmas that really aren't Christmas songs.  People are funny what they pick up on.  Then one of my fellow bloggers talked about one of the songs I always think about and I'm like doh!  Your random thoughts need to be blog posts goofball!!

Anywho, the first song is Baby, It's Cold Outside.  This is not a Christmas song.  When I was a kid I watched old movies with my mom, especially musicals.  I have seen every musical Esther Williams was ever in!  I loved her, she was the queen of sass in her time and she was a fabulous swimmer. She always had these big, synchronized swimming numbers in her movies.  So there's a movie called Neptune's Daughter 1949 with Esther, Ricardo Montalban, Red Skelton and Betty Garrett (an amazing character actress).  Ricardo is putting the moves on Esther and she's like, no way, hence, the song.  Then Betty is putting moves on Red and he's like, no way!  It's classic movie gold.  But somewhere along the way, someone recorded a duet for a Christmas album and then bam!  It's a freaking Christmas tune.  Uh, not really.

The other song that actually makes me cringe when I hear it at Christmas time, even though I love it, is Dolly Parton's Hard Candy Christmas.  Um, seriously, does NO ONE pay attention?  This is a song from the movie Best Little Whorehouse in Texas 1982 for crying out loud!  It's a song being sung by a group of hookers being thrown out of their brothel people!!!   It has NOTHING to do with Christmas except that it has the word Christmas in it!   I love Dolly, she's one of the most talented song writers in the world and I love this song.  But it's not a freaking Christmas song!!!!

Who knows where traditions start but it scares me what song will get picked up next for a new Christmas jingle.  Maybe something fun by Megadeth.  Actually, that might be kind of awesome. LOL! By the by, if you've never seen either of these movies have fun trying to find them but they are both worth it. I own Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and I might have to go start building a Esther Williams movie collection.  Peace my friends!

Juicing - if there's no vodka involved then what the hell is the point?!

So, I have high blood pressure.  I have had ever since I was pregnant with my daughter who is getting ready to turn 14 in two days (ACK!).  Children do more than just change your life, they change your bodies, usually forever.  Not that I regret it for one minute, mind you.  For years I tried to keep my blood pressure under control with diet and exercise. Not very successfully I might add.  I used to have this fabulous metabolism.  I did not appreciate how amazing it was until it was gone for good.  I had a baby and turned 30 right after- it was like flipping a switch. Gone are the days of eating and drinking whatever I want.  Unfortunately, I still have not completely wrapped my brain around this even after 14 years. See I love food.  I mean, LOVE food.  I try to eat healthy but life gets in the way.  I'm sure most of you know how that is.
Yeah, I would totally marry food.  Anyway, as usual, I digress.  A couple of years ago my doctor put me on BP meds.  I've still tried to keep exercising and eating right but I often feel that I am fighting a losing battle.  Cry me a river right?  Anywho, I have a week before I can get into the doctor so I was researching ways to lower blood pressure naturally.  One of the things I noticed was drinking pomegranate juice.  I work at a fancy office/hotel complex.  It has one of those little stores that sells natural juices in all combinations.  No pomegranate juice but one of the combos was a "magic" weight loss drink. That kind of stuff makes me think of wheat grass and all that other nonsense but I thought, what the hey, let's give it a try.  Can't hurt, right?  WRONG!!  Even when I walked through the door my cells in my body screamed in protest.  All natural, I hate those words.  As if that guarantees its good for you.  You know what else is all natural?  Bella Donna, its an all natural poison for crying out loud! So the drink I got had grapefruit, spinach, pineapple, cucumber, parsley, ginger and cinnamon.  Okay, I like all that stuff. That should be okay.  What I noticed when they were making my drink?  They didn't use just a little parsley.  They used two whole big, honking handfuls handfuls of  parsley.  This was basically parsley juice with a little bit of grapefruit juice thrown in.  It was the most God awful thing I think I've ever tasted.  I wasn't able to drink more than just a couple of ounces and it took me two hours, a bag of cheetos and a large chocolate chip cookie to get that taste out of my mouth!  So much for my diet. But it was completely worth it to get rid of the nastiness.  My taste buds are still reeling from being subjected to such horror!  And for my troubles?  I got the most amazing heartburn within in a few minutes!  Wow, being healthy is so much fun!  NOT!

Do you know who John Pinette is?  If you don't, then I am very sorry for you.  He's a hilarious comedian that sadly, died not too long ago.  He was, shall we say, a tad husky. Here is his take on Juicing.  This is from his hilarious show, I'm Starving.  When ever I need to laugh, I watch the whole thing.  It never fails to have me crying tears of laughter.  I regret not getting a chance to see him live before he passed away.

Juicing is a fad, like so many other fads before it, the evil wheat germ among them.  I'm not saying it doesn't have health benefits.  There are those are fanatical about it.  Good for you if  you like the taste of seriously bitter grass.  I'm just saying it's probably not for me.  I'll have to find another route to living a more healthy lifestyle.  Something that preferably doesn't taste like ass.

Skinny shaming, is that really even a thing?

If you haven't seen this video, take a few minutes to watch.

It's amazeballs.  No lie, go on, I'll wait.  I'm obsessed with it.  Catchy right?  Beware it will now be stuck in YOUR head and you'll listen to it a million times too.  I first saw it on The Bloggess' page.  My daughter had a last hurrah with her friends this past weekend before school started and we drove around jamming out to tunes and this was one of the favs.  I cranked it up so loud I was slightly concerned about my speakers blowing.  It's fun, has a great message about body image and even has a fun video.  Admittedly, the artist isn't all that heavy, she's just not "skinny."  And that's awesome.  People come in all sizes and shapes and we should celebrate that.  I feel that is the basic message of this song.  I was on I-Tunes yesterday to purchase the song.  I seriously cannot get enough of it!  Anyway, I happened to look at the reviews thinking everyone would love it as much as I do.  I was shocked to see several reviews from "naturally thin" girls saying they found the song offensive. Seriously!?  They said it was "skinny shaming".  Okay, for real, is that even a thing?  Really want to get your mind blown?  Read the comments below the video.  I mean I am totally against bullying but I think these girls who refer to themselves as naturally skinny need to get a grip and go eat a doughnut.  Do they really feel like this song is trying to make them feel bad about being skinny?  If they do, then they aren't really listening.  Maybe they are too skinny to hear properly.  "Every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top."  They have NO clue what it feels like to not be a larger body type and all that goes with it.  Have they ever walked down a hallway and heard people snickering and making mooing and oinking sounds?!  Nope. What kind of noise would you make to harass a skinny person anyway?  How would the taunts go?  "Oh wow, she's so skinny she doesn't even cast a shadow!"  That's pretty lame if you ask me.  I applaud this song and it's message.  If this fun, upbeat song makes you feel bad for being skinny, more than likely you have some major insecurities at play there.  There's a famous quote by Eleanor Roosevelt ~ "No one can make you feel inferior without your permission."  Totes McGotes folks!

Now people can be cruel over any number of different things.  I know this.  It's everywhere and some of it is downright evil.  I've never heard of someone getting picked on for being too skinny but I'm sure it happens.  I've worked hard as a mother to convince my daughter, it's okay to be different and it's okay to be weird.  She has "Be Weird" written in lipstick on her mirror.  In our society being different is frowned upon.  When it really should be celebrated!   If we were all the same, things would be so damn boring we'd all blow our brains out. Diversity should be praised above all other things.  My daughter is very thin, she loves this song.  She thinks it's fun!  Because it is FUN!!   I have no idea why this song would construed in a negative way except that people are simply cray cray over the things they get upset over.  It's a growing issue in our society.

And as usual, I went off on a tangent.  Bottom line, skinny bitches need to get over themselves and listen to ALL the words of the song and just enjoy the fact that's a fun damn song.  Music is about entertainment people and I for one find this song highly entertaining.  I hope you do to!

And if you are "naturally thin" bully for you! I used to be once upon a time too, hope your metabolism never shuts down like mine did.  Now go get a doughnut (that won't stick to your ass anyway) and a grip on reality and get the fuck over it!  Everyone really just needs to calm down. It's just a song and it's freaking AWESOME!

Who thought jumpsuits really needed to make a comeback?

I've noticed that every 10 years or so, many fashion trends feel a need to repeat themselves.  There are some that should die a slow and painful death never, ever to return again.  I feel the jumpsuit is one of these.  I've noticed those hideous torture devices are making a comeback recently.  No, just no.  Why? Who thought that would be a good idea?

I don't know about you but I have never been very comfortable getting almost completely naked when I have to go to the bathroom!  Who has time for that? If my pants have more than one button I know I'm in trouble if I am making a mad dash for the bathroom.  Which I almost always am because I always wait until the last second.

And then of course, there is the part where you really only look good in a jumpsuit if you are a size zero.  I know very few people in real life that are a size zero.  Most of my friends and associates come in real sizes.  So please fashion industry, go find something new, I'm begging here!!

At least the men's jumpsuits are a thing of the past.  I hope!!

Flared legs too!

And then came the 80's

Who doesn't need the shoulders of a line backer?

Lest we forget the 90's and the Laura Ashley phase....

And they're baaaaackkkkkk!!

They look nice on these ladies, I will admit but on me, nope.  Not gonna happen!

Hiding my own Easter eggs....

One of my former bosses always said this.  He'd be searching for something around the office and he'd tell us "I could hide my own Easter eggs!"  It always made me laugh and it hit home since I am forever putting things in a "safe" place and then promptly forgetting where that place is.  Sometimes it really worries me how forgetful I am becoming.  And I am not above acting a fool when in search of a missing item.

Not that long ago, I "lost" my debit card.  I had it out of my wallet and had left it on the kitchen counter, when I went back later, it was no where to be seen.  Trying not to panic as I knew it couldn't have sprouted legs and walked out, I began to tear the house apart looking for it.  I was supposed to leave and go meet friends, as I looked and looked, becoming more agitated, I called (ok maybe screamed) for my daughter, to see if she had seen it.  Little Miss non-observant said no, which she always does, she's worse than I am and she's young!  There's no excuse there. 20 minutes later and pretty close to tears I did suddenly did a pat down and found that it was stuck safe and sound in the side of my bra!  What place could be safer?  From me too, apparently.  I have no recollection of picking it up and putting it there.  Good grief!  I grudgingly admitted to my loving child where I had found it.  She laughed at me.  And to add insult to injury, she had a friend over who bore witness to the whole drama and shared the story with her parents.  Lovely.  Ah well, you just have to laugh at yourself when you realize you've been ridiculous right?

A week or so ago I found a note about an overdue library book from the school. I asked my daughter about it.  "Oh yeah, that was one of the books that was on the stairs, but you picked it up so I don't know where it is now."  How dare I!  Picking something up and putting it away! The sheer audacity!  I recall vaguely a couple of books on the stairs that were there for what seemed like months.  I finally got tired of seeing them and obviously on a cleaning rampage had the temerity to move them. "I'm sure I put them on your bookshelf honey."  "No, mom, I looked and it's not there. Why did you have to pick them up?"  Seriously?!  How is this my fault and not hers for not keeping track of her stuff?  Now school is almost out so of course this week I've gotten both emails and phone calls from the school saying the book must be returned NOW or I will have to pay to have it replaced.  I'm living in fear of the book police showing up on my doorstep at any moment.  So I decided to go on the hunt.  I am not opposed to paying to replace it but I want to make sure it's actually lost first.  I spent the better part of an hour looking everywhere I could think of that I would have put this book.  This led to anger and frustration with myself for not being more organized to save myself from this type of nonsense.  Before givin up, I decided to check the bookshelf in my daughter's room.  Guess what I found under a few papers?  Yup!  You guessed it.  I showed it triumphantly to my kiddo.  She barely even turned around.  "Oh was it on the bookcase?"  The restraint I showed in not lobbing the book at my child's head was really impressive.

So now I know, snarky teenagers are sucky at looking for things but amazing at assigning blame to others.  But since I am the queen of losing shit, I'm an easy target!

My own worst enemy...

The two most common things I have found that I say a great deal to myself are "I hate my life" and "I'm tired."

The first is an absolute lie.  I don't hate my life.  Not in the least.  I have a beautiful daughter, who is my world even when she's being a snarky teenager.  I have a good job, my own house and a nice car.  I am very blessed to have many amazing friends who love me despite the fact that I am, at times, a babbling, insecure, weirdo.  I have family that loves me unconditionally and supports me no matter what.  I normally say "I hate my life" to myself when something is going wrong or I'm just caught up in a stressful moment.  I have to remind myself that it's just a bad day or moment, not a bad life.  But I still catch myself saying it.  All.  The.  Time.  It's a habit I really wish I could break.

The second thing, about being tired is sometimes true but not nearly as much as I say or think it.  I must think it 1000 times a day, every day.  Can I possibly be that tired all the time?  Lately I've made myself stop and evaluate, am I really tired?  The answer generally is no, but for some reason my brain just has that immediate response for everything.  Also, if I am actually tired, it's usually my own fault.  See, I'm a night owl in an 8 - 5 world.  I get a second wind around 10 pm and it's not unusual for me to stay up until midnight or later. Last night I was up until 1am.  Thankfully I don't have to be up until 7 but still, I'm probably always running a little short of sleep.  Sometimes on the weekends my body will take its revenge and I will sleep about 10 hours straight.  But there is rarely time for a luxury of that nature in this busy world.  Am I doing anything productive when I stay up late?  Sometimes yes, sometimes no.  Last night for instance, I was trying to clear some space of my DVR.  Yup, I was sitting on my ass watching TV.  These are the days when I go to bed berating myself for staying up.  As if there is no excuse for not getting housework done (which is NEVER done by the way, everything just gets dirty again) or working on one of my many projects I have going or am trying to get started.  My inner voice seems to think I am never allowed to relax.  We have an ongoing inner battle where I justify that I have every right to some do nothing time now and then and she tells me, whatever, you are always sitting on your lazy ass!  Go do something!

I think I may have mentioned my inner voice before, she's a total bitch!  I'm not kidding.  She is constantly putting me down, telling me I talk too much, drink too much and that everyone will tire of me at some point.  According to her I am fat and ugly and will spend the rest of my life alone.  She's just freaking EVIL!  When a friend tells me I'm beautiful, she's there whispering in my ear that they are only saying it because they love me and don't really mean it.  She's constantly pointing out all my faults and drilling holes in my confidence.  They say to be careful how you speak to your children as that becomes their inner voice.  I don't think that is true, my mother never would have said the ugly things my inner voice says to me.  So where does this come from?  Why when we look at ourselves are we so quick to find our every flaw and use it to tear ourselves down?  I think part of it comes from when we are growing up and we don't want to appear vain so we start talking about things we don't like about ourselves.  Then that becomes our focus more than the things we do like about ourselves.
A few years ago there was a TV Show called How to Look Good Naked.  It was hosted by Carson Kressley of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy fame.  I think it was based on a show in England.  It wasn't on very long but I really, really wish they would bring it back.  I know the title is frightening, who out there thinks they look good naked?  Not me, that's for sure.  But they would take ordinary ladies and strip them down to their underwear and take pictures.  They would post the lady's picture (from the neck down) on the jumbo tron in Times Square or somewhere equally obvious.  Then they would ask passers-by what they thought of the picture.  They would then show the video clips to the woman so she could hear the many positive comments from total strangers.  They also did a makeover and gave them tips on how to dress in a more flattering way for their body shape.  Each show ended with a photo-shoot where the hope was that they had built up the woman's self-confidence to the point she felt she could pose in the buff.  Tastefully covered by scarves or feathers or what have you, of course.  We never saw nipple or anything.  I loved it!  I was always a blubbering mess by the time it was over, these women were changed forever.  I secretly wanted to nominate myself to be on the show.  I wanted to meet Carson. That man seems like he is just too much fun!  And I would love tips on how to dress. I never can seem to find a style that is me.  I end up feeling like a frumpy mom most of the time.  But isn't it sad that there even needed to be a show like that for women to help them build their self-confidence?

And just to play devil's advocate, let's look at the other side of the coin too.  If you see a confident women don't you sometimes think to yourself, jeez what a snob?  Why!?  Why is being a self-critical mess acceptable and being strong and confident a sign that you are a conceited jerk?  It's a fine line. And one of the great mysteries of the universe.  The painful realization for me now is that I'm starting to notice the same behavior in my daughter.  This girl is truly beautiful.  I'm not just saying that just as her mom.  She could be a model if she had the desire to be.  But if you ask her, she will give you a very long list of things she doesn't like about herself and the way she looks.  I have never said any of these things to her so I know that it's not me that has become her inner voice.  But the outside world with all it's unrealistic views on beauty that has started chipping away at her confidence.  It makes me unbearably sad.  I've tried very hard to build up her confidence and support a strong self-image.  But what I didn't pay attention to was the fact that every time I called myself fat or said something else negative about myself, she was listening and it has affected her in a negative way as well.  Now I have an even greater challenge of trying to improve my own self-image so I can lead by example for her.

As happens more often than not, I have gone way off on some tangent and can barely remember my original point.  It's probably far too late now to try to get back there now.  I was upfront about this somewhere on this blog that I am fairly ADD and that means crazy, long, rambling tangents will happen people!

I had a manager and friend many moons ago that told me she needed to talk to me about some complaints that she had received about me.  I almost lost my mind.  I am all about people pleasing and this just about sent me over the edge.  Then she informed me that the person who was complaining about me was ME.  She told me to stop.  So I guess the message I have today if there is one in all this, is to just give yourself a break.  And love yourself.  It's okay.  You really ARE beautiful. And you do deserve some lazy, TV watching time, we all do.  And maybe if I let myself I will realize that I am beautiful too.   I will leave you with a photo of a poem given to me by a woman who is a mother to me, I keep it on my fridge where I have to see it almost every day.

Fear and loathing on Aisle 7

I'll be honest here, I abhor going to the grocery store.  I think it is owned and operated by Satan himself, who is having a fantastic time watching the lot of us push our carts up and down aisle after aisle like mindless zombies.

I used to enjoy it but somewhere around the nine millionth time I went, it lost its allure.  One of the few drawbacks to being single is there is never anyone else to go, just you.  The only thing that makes it almost tolerable to me now is when the wine department is doing free tastings.

I've tried both making a list and winging it and neither works out well.  I always get home and it's like dang it!i Forgot such and such and that was the whole reason I went in the first place.  Plus I can never stick to a list.  I'm a horrible impulse shopper, so I usually end up spending twice my budget and coming home with stuff I don't necessarily need.  I put it off as long as possible (usually when we are running low on TP, the one thing I refuse to be out of EVER) and now I go on off days and times.  Like Wednesday at 9 pm.  There are no wine tastings but there are also less assholes.  Part of the reason I don't like the store, is the people who flock there and crowd the aisles and are just so completely thoughtless and rude it makes me crazy!  I was taught to keep to the right side of the aisle and when I'm looking for something I stop opposite it and do my best to stay out of the way.  Was this a lesson only MY mother taught me?  It floors me when you are perusing a shelf and someone pushes their cart in front of you and stops.  Right. In. Front. Of. You.  Like you don't even exist.  I am so non-confrontational, I never say anything but it makes me want to flick their ear and say Hey!  Human being here!  I'm sure they would respond along the lines of oh no, I didn't see you there!  Seriously?  I'm 5'10" and not skinny so I'm pretty sure I would qualify as visible.  It blows my mind how many people lack common courtesy and are just oblivious to the world around them.

Then there is the whole, we have 30 checkout lanes but we're only going to have 4 open and one of those is 10 items or less, thing?  I know it has to do with staffing and all but it's still irritating.  And don't even get me started on the parking lot and all the people who are too busy to push the cart the extra 10 feet to the return area.

I live in a small town, the same small town where I grew up and I'm just amazed at people who move to a place like this for the atmosphere but who apparently have no intention of contributing to it.  They bring their big city attitudes and make me seriously consider moving out to the middle of nowhere.  I'm a gregarious person by nature but I cannot abide rudeness from anyone.

I would consider employing a service for grocery store trips, if there was one available.  Just so I could get a breather and maybe then I wouldn't feel like I was traversing into hell every time I went to the store.  I think Amazon should start offering ordering groceries online.  That would be amazing as I'm one of the few people left who don't feel comfortable going in my pajamas.

Ultimately, it's just one of the necessary evils in life and I need to suck it up and deal with it best I can.  Also I know most people are fairly decent and it's just a few bad apples that ruin it for the rest of us.  But it seems like the bad apples are multiplying faster than the good eggs.

Alone doesn't always mean lonely

For those that don't know me I am over 40 and twice divorced.  I know, your first thought is, man there must be something wrong with me.  Or, I must be some kind of crazy bitch.  Well, I hope the first one isn't true, although I've had some rough moments worrying over it, I will confess.  The second I don't think is true. While I might be more than my fair share of crazy, I'm more of the fun kind of crazy.

So here I am heading into my mid-forties riding solo.  This is actually intentional.  I met my second husband when I was separated from but technically still married to my first.  There was no real down time in between the two relationships. So when my second husband and I decided to get a divorce I made up my mind that I wanted a break.  I had no interest in a romantic relationship. That's not to say I wanted to crawl in a hole and never come out.  I simply wanted time to be by myself and make sure I was comfortable with me.  I also wanted to be able to concentrate on raising my daughter.  The prospect of dating with a child was foreign and awkward to me.  Still is honestly.  Plus I didn't want to rush into another relationship for fear of making the exact same mistakes I had made in the past.  This is a big thing for me and a huge reason I'm not in any kind of hurry.

I decided I was going to go out and do things by myself.  Each time I have ventured out on my own it has always turned out to be a really fun adventure.  I'm a gregarious person by nature so I have no problem talking to complete strangers.  I've gone and explored a couple of nearby wineries and met some wonderful and fun people.  I've gone to restaurants on my own and hung out in the bar and chatted up the patrons, bartenders and even owners.  You'd be surprised how many people are willing to strike up a conversation.  Not once has anyone made me feel like a lonely loser.  (I just realized I haven't done this in a while and it's time to get back out there!)  Don't get me wrong, I love my friends, we have a blast together. Without them I would be lost, but I like that I am comfortable just being on my own sometimes.  In fact, if I don't get one day every now and then when I can have some me time, things could get ugly.  I did go through an introverted period in my life and that quiet little girl is still inside me somewhere and every now and then she rears her head.

But no matter how well adjusted I sound, I still have my low points.  I'll see pictures or posts of people who are celebrating their 65th (or whatever) wedding anniversary and I get down because I realize, that will never be me.  Pause for collective "awe" here.  And I am learning to be okay with that.  On the other side of the coin, I'll be honest, I have no idea if I ever want to get married again.  Not to say I am anti-relationship.  But it will take someone pretty freaking amazing to convince me to make a third trip down the aisle.  I'm talking slaying dragons and riding around on white horses here.  Someone who is willing to accept that I don't need to be taken care of but still wants to take care of me anyway.  Someone as goofy as I am.  The list goes on but you get the general idea.

But this begs the question, do we really have to be married to live a fulfilling life?  Why does being a single woman mean I'm automatically on the hunt for another husband?  Oh and by the way it sure as hell doesn't mean I'm after someone else's husband!  I mean, puleeze, no need to lock up your hubbies around me ladies, I have no interest.

I'm sure you've all seen this meme or something similar:

Which is great and beautiful.  I give props to these fabulous people and anyone who can break my current record of ten years.  A successful marriage is a lot of work.  But I think stuff like this glosses over the fact that up until recent years, it was unusual for women to work outside of the home and many stayed in unhappy or even destructive relationships because they were scared to try and make it on their own.  Now women feel empowered and would rather be on their own than settle for something that makes them unhappy.  I don't feel like I threw away either one of my marriages.  They ended for various reasons and I know in my heart that in both cases it was the best possible decision for me.  And you know what?  I'm fine on my own.  I enjoy hanging out with my friends, married and single alike.  If I get lonely I hop on Facebook and see what people are up to or I call one of my friends and see if they are up for doing anything or just hanging out.   And sometimes I just wallow in it a bit and stay in my jammies all day and watch sappy Lifetime or Hallmark movies.  Or I go grab a book and I read.  Nothing gets you out of your head like immersing yourself in a story.  I also enjoy my alone time with my kiddo, we are very close and talk about just about everything.  We have a very special bond that I wouldn't trade that for anything.

Bottom line, I don't feel like I am missing out, not yet anyway. (Check back in a few years, I may have completely changed my tune.)  And I'm determined that I'm not ever going to settle again.  I know what I want and what I don't want.   This is my time to make sure I am good with me.  I did start dating again recently after four years completely on my own. He's a sweet guy and we have a lot of fun together.  Do I hear wedding bells?  Not really.  But so what?  I'm busy with my life and he's busy with his and we enjoy each other's company when we can.  It may never evolve into more than that and that's okay.  There's no pressure and there shouldn't be.

Do I hope for happily ever after someday?  Absolutely, because deep down inside I am a pathetically, hopeless romantic.  I just have to trust that when it's meant to be it will happen.  Until then, I have many people in my life who love me and accept me for who I am no matter what.  And what more can you ask for than that?  So I may get a little drunker than I should when we hang out and dance on a few tables.  But if you've never done that, well, I'm sad for you.

Unplugging

As I sit here typing this on my laptop, to my right is my Android smart phone (no not an I-phone, I'm fighting the power), to my left is my I-pad (yeah, so, apparently I suck at fighting the power).  Also on my desk is my daughter's I-pad mini, my digital camera and my wireless printer.  Sometimes I look at this over-abundance of technology beeping and blinking at me and I think okay this is out of hand.  I need to just shut it all off and walk away.

When I was growing up there was a small park just a few blocks from my house.   This park occupied four small lots on a corner in our neighborhood.  The land had been bought and donated to the city in the memory of two brothers from our town that had died while serving their country in World War II.  The park was mostly empty except for a monument in the center which had a large granite cross on top.  I say was.  It still is pretty much the same way today except last time I drove by the city had built a swing set near the monument.

As a kid I spent most of my time with my nose in a book.  And way back then, spending a summer day inside was unheard of.  I remember my grandmother telling me that I needed to go outside to "blow the stink off me."  No, not kidding, that's what she would tell us.  More days than I can count I would ride my bike or walk down to the park and sit on the cool stone monument with my back leaning on the cross, reading.  Or I would draw.  And I would make up stories and write them in down in spiral notebooks.  I spent hours and hours lost in fantasy worlds.  It was wonderful.

Now we have all this technology available to us and I know, it's great.  Don't get me wrong, I love all my toys and gadgets.  I went without my phone for 24 hours recently and I thought I was going to lose my mind.  I was nervous to leave the house.  What if something happened?  What if someone needed me?  I guess I forgot I lived almost 30 years without having a cellphone and managed to survive unscathed.   But we've gotten so used to being connected, it makes us feel uncomfortable to be out of touch.

I think unplugging every now and then is not just a good idea, it's necessary.  Times change and not always for the better.  Ever see the movie Wall-E?  I don't think it's that far off base that in our future we could all be blobs in chairs letting machines do most of the heavy lifting for us.  Hopefully it won't come to that but I have a great fear of it getting close.

So even though it scares the hell out me to be without my phone for more than 30 minutes, I really feel the need to get away from it at least for one afternoon.  And just because I'm cool like that, I'm going to drag my daughter along with me, kicking and screaming if necessary.  No phones, no technology.  We'll go to a park and get us some nature.  Although it will make me crazy not to have a way to take pictures to commemorate the expidition, it would defeat the purpose to take even a camera.  The point is to take in the world around us with just our senses.  I'm pretty sure my daughter will view this as torture, but oh well.  It's time to get out there and get the stink blown off us.

Stop trying to make 'Shindig' happen

So apparently my teen daughter is a mean girl. Or at least she thinks she's Billy Badass with me anyway.  On our way home from an all day volleyball tournament to get ready for the league banquet the other day we were having a chat.

Me:  "So as soon as this shindig tonight is over we are going home to crash."

Her:  (after a few moments of silence). "You know, no one says shindig anymore. "

Me:  "What? " (Feigning surprise). "They don't?  Huh."  Pause while I let this percolate.
"So wait are you trying to tell me shindig isn't going to happen?  Like fetch?  And that I should stop trying to make it happen?"

Her:  (giggles)   "Yeah."  [By the way, to go off topic for a minute - does it make everyone else feel like a friggin' champion if you can make your teenager laugh or smile?  When it happens I want to run up a bunch of stairs to the Rocky theme and dance around like a fool at the top!  Okay maybe 'run' is a little ambitious.  Walk up slowly holding the handrail and dance at the top while puffing like a steam engine from the climb is closer to reality.]

Sometime later:

Her:  "Do you remember when Elvis died? (And before I can answer) I don't, because I was no where near being born yet."

Me:  "Uh yeah, I was 7 and I do remember." Where is this going?.

Her:  "And you probably remember when that rocket blew up too."

Me:  "Shuttle and yes that was 86 and I was like 15."

Okay, is this little shit trying to tell me I'm old and decrepit or something!?!

Her:  "Wow Mom."

Me, defensively:  "I only know the exact year because we were playing an 80's trivia last night at my friend's house and that was one of the questions!"

Her:  (laughing)  "Uh-huh.  Okay."

Oh yeah, she's definitely hinting not so subtly that I am beyond ancient!

So this is where I have to remind myself that anything over 20 is ancient to a 13 year old.  Besides I do love it when I can make her laugh.  And I love our little chats in the car, even when she is basically insulting me.  I have made the car a free talk zone.  Anything can be discussed with no judgment, or at least if I must judge, I try to do it on the inside.  Since my kiddo is spoiled rotten and has not just a Kindle and a I-pad Mini but an I-phone (Seriously?!  When I was her age I was excited when I got a new set of markers!!) it's hard to compete for her attention sometimes.  Of course, she is always free to talk to me about anything and at any time and place.  I remind her of that constantly, I'm never going to win a mom of the year award or anything but I know the only way we will survive the teenage years is to keep an open dialog between us.  It just seems like we have some of our best talks while driving in the car, maybe because it's just the two of us in an small, enclosed space.  Whatever the reason I try to just enjoy the fact that she's engaged and participating in the conversation.  She's a complete smart ass (no idea where she gets it) and says some pretty hilarious stuff sometimes and unfortunately I tend to forget exactly what it was within 20 minutes.  But I never forget the feeling of enjoying time with the person who means the most to me.

And then there was NOTHING!!!

So, if you haven't read my first post, go back and read it, I'll wait.  What, no?  Ain't nobody got time for that?  Okay fine, here's the gist.  I got all inspired by a quote a friend sent me and decided I needed to realize my life long dream of becoming a writer.  That this was actually a message from God through my friend. And that the best way to do this was to get my butt writing.  I thought, well, my friends tell my I'm mildly humorous.  Why don't I write a blog?  Doesn't that sound like a great idea?

I follow several bloggers.  These women are hilarious, they are snarky and slightly bent (this is a compliment) and in a word, amazeballs.  First, the one that started it all is People I Want to Punch in the Throat.  The first post I read was the one that went viral where she went on a rant about that creepy little elf on the shelf dude (oh so glad my daughter was too old for that before it became popular).  Please check Jen out.  She's my inspiration.  She has a FAQ about blogging and is one of the main reasons you are reading this today.  There is also Moms Who Drink and Swear, I mean thank God I'm not the only one!  Yes I have a very foul mouth and I likes to drink a bit.  Okay a LOT.  If foul mouths bother you, you might want to fuck off now.  Just kidding, but not really.  I will be swearing occasionally, or depending on my mood you might think I have Tourette's.  And last but not least is the grand dame, The Bloggess.  If you have never read any of these blogs.  Go do it right now!  No wait, scratch that, finish mine first.  But really, you should do yourself a favor and check them out.  They make me cry tears of laughter.  And the other really awesome thing about them, they are all friends and support each other.  And maybe I can get in on the love fest too someday but I'm just a baby blogger, don't want to get ahead of myself.

So I had this great idea of writing a blog and thanks to PIWTPITT, I had the tools.  So I setup my Blogger account and wrote my first post and bam!  I posted it. Whew!  But that wasn't enough.  I created a Facebook page for it and (insert shameless plug here) if you haven't liked me on Facebook, please do so now.  Sorry, not sure when I got so bossy.  Please, please, please go like my page on Facebook.

Before I could chicken out I invited all my friends to like my page on FB and I watched with amazement and glee as person after person liked it. I got over 100 likes in about 5 hours!!  I was over the moon!  They like me, they really, really like me!  And then, it happened.  Buyer's remorse.  Reality, and probably some of my inner voice, the Evil, set in.  I started to think holy Hell WHAT HAVE I DONE?!  What was I thinking?  People are going to SEE this, they are going READ this! I might as well rip off all my clothes and go running down the street screaming "Look at me!!"  They are going to think I'm stupid and make fun of me!  I'm not funny!  What was I thinking?  I mean I totally panicked. I will never be able to keep up with this! What the hell else am I going to write about?!   AAAAAAACCCCCKKKKKK!  So I drank a very large glass of red wine and went to bed berating myself for my temerity and seriously considering telling everyone it was a very elaborate and early April fool's joke.

And I woke up the next morning, took a deep breath and sat down to write this post.  I reminded myself I don't have to post every day.  I can post a couple times a week or a couple times a month.  I will write when inspiration strikes me and save them so hopefully I will have a few stored up over time for when I am suffering from writer's block or what have you.  I am going to kick fear's ASS!!  Self doubt, you too! Screw you!  And If you don't like my blog, don't read it.  I mean for reals! I really hope I only get positive comments at least for now.  I know PIWTPITT says I need to get a thick skin and I know that I do, but I can't help it.  If someone berates one of my posts I will probably drink copious amount of alcohol and cry like a baby.  But I will get over it.  Not everyone will like my random thoughts of whatever.  In fact, I'm not sure anyone but my friends, who love me and know I am very slightly bent and random, will ever read this blog but I don't care.  I'm living the dream baby, yeah!  Or at least I'm writing and that's the whole point.

My Message from God

Some of you saw that and said, yup, she's finally gone COMPLETELY off her rocker.  And while that may be, and I won't dispute it, it is completely beside the point. Some of you may have just been turned off, thinking oh good grief not another religious nut!  I know I feel the same way, this is not a preachy post so just bear with me a minute.  I'll get to the point eventually.  It's totally cool too!

So today I received what I totally believe to be a message from God.  And I had to share.  Now some people probably don't even realize I'm a Christian as I'm not one of those bible thumping, scripture spewing folk, but I have a very personal relationship with the big guy upstairs and today He responded to a prayer of mine in a way that is probably about as close to a flashing neon sign as He gets.

You see, I'm a writer, it's the only thing in my life that I have ever had a real passion for.  When I was 11 years old I realized that I wanted to write.  I had (and still have) a constant dialog in my head of stories and scenes.  I was also an avid reader and I went, I can do that. Plus it was the only thing my little introverted mind could come up with that I could do for a living and not have to talk to people but that is a story for another day.

And so I began to write.  And then, something terrible happened.  I found out this writing gig was a lot harder than it looked.  I mean a LOT harder.  I still to this day, many, many, many, many, many moons later, have never finished a story although I have started a ton. My goal at this point in my life is to just finish one of these damn stories!  Just one!!!  The problem?  A large part is due to the Evil.  That's what I call her.  She is my inner voice/writing critic.  She's a bitch, no nice way to put it.  She's incredibly negative and constantly telling me I suck at writing (and just about everything else).  She's really loud too, but I'm trying to learn to drown her ass out.

Back to the story.  Today started like so many others, after dragging myself out of bed and showering, I meandered into the kitchen and saw a blinking light on my phone.  I had a FB message!  Now I know what you are thinking, God so did not send you a FB message crazy lady!  Well, no, not directly anyway.  But I did receive this message from a very dear friend.

And do you know what she told me?  That this quote made her think of me and my writing!! My first reaction was, awe, that is so incredibly sweet!  I've got some really awesome friends, no lie.  But the more I thought about this, the more I realized that this was more than just my sweet friend sending me words of encouragement, this was God telling me through her, hey, you, you know how you are always asking me what you are supposed to be doing with your life?  Guess what?  Here is your answer.  You need to be WRITING.  Get off your duff!  No more excuses!  Freaky right?  I mean how often do you get an actual sign!?  Oh and you can argue all you want that this wasn't the big guy upstairs but I choose to believe it is.

So today I sat down and started this blog.  It will be full of randomness and things I find funny or irritating or what have you.  And I will finish a book this year if it kills me, which it might, or at least kill my liver.

This is a monumental day for me.  I don't know if I will ever be able to express the gratitude I have for my friend who decided this morning that she was going to lift me up give me wings. What do you say to someone that passed along a message from the almighty?  Thanks just doesn't seem to cover it.  I think the best way I can thank her is to write.  She has given me the inspiration to renew my purpose and my mission.  Today is the first step to fulfilling a life long dream.  So here goes, I got the message God!  I heard it loud and clear!!
